A poem for Scorpio

Rain, Rain

It was a rainy day

when I noticed the disheveled man

crumpled on the subway

foot hiding foot

arm hugging arm

and yearned to hold him

Exiting the station in a human swarm

someone pushed to get ahead

so I elbowed sharp and quick

then stared ahead with boredom

and I fucking dare you

My boot snagged on the concourse tile

and I stumbled

cursing a god I don’t believe in

as if he’d just tripped me

A greasy ponytailed woman in sweatpants

stood in the Petro Can parking lot

smoking and animated

with a styrofoam cup

and for most of the walk home

I wanted to be her

As twilight came

I spread peanut butter on old bread

and placed it in the yard

for the family of racoons I love to see

even though my husband warns

this will make them careless

and someone will trap them and take them away.

Later I sat on the stairs and cried for no one reason

heavy tears that felt like they belonged to those

long dead or barely living

just outside my home

focusing on breathing long and slow and deep

foot hiding foot

arm hugging arm

Until the rain went away
